Christmas pain relief & looking forward

Well, it has been quite a year so far, hasn't it? With all the upheaval and inconsistency, there's one thing that you can be sure of treating yourself to more cheese, chocolate, and alcohol than you usually would for a few weeks, hopefully relatively guilt-free, too! I hope you've all been enjoying this Christmas period, even if you're surrounded by fewer people than you'd like or are accustomed to. Regardless of the people you can't see in person, I'm sure the same festive fun and excesses are in full flow, but do we consider the additional stress it can put on our bodies? Only when it's too late, anyhow! Food and drink aside, we tend to put much pressure on our backs this time of year, from carrying heavy presents and shopping, shifting furniture around to fit in the family, and slouching in front of the TV for extended periods, not to mention standing over the stove and sky-high sinks full of washing up. Despite it feeling like and technically being a holiday, it can often feel like more work than you're used to throughout the working year, and we need to realize it. As such, here are a few tips from us to help you limit any aggravations that could hinder your winter fun.

Limiting Back Pain

Help yourself to avoid back pain over Christmas by incorporating at least one or two of the following activities:

  • Take some time each day to do some back-strengthening exercises and stretches. With just a few minutes each day, you can keep your back primed for the extra off-the-cuff exertions. Try a few in the morning and a few after an evening bath or before bed.
  • Every so often, just be mindful to check your posture when sitting or lying around for too long, especially following a about of indulgence, post-lunch, and dinner, for instance.
  • Also, be mindful of your posture if you are on your phone or laptop for long periods. Posture is often overlooked and is a significant cause of neck and shoulder issues if left unchecked.

Is back pain already present?

Over-resting can cause the pain to grow, so be sure to try and stay active. Even if it's too wet to get out for a walk, why not sit on the floor instead of the sofa periodically and do some floor stretches to keep you feeling nimble and your muscles and joints 'worked'? Whatever works for you, try to stay as active as possible and stick to a daily routine. Nothing exceptional but straightforward and often will do you a world of good and keep you nimble enough to start 2021 on the right foot, or left if you prefer!

Looking forward to 2021, I want to thank you all for your support this year, and I am sure the coming 12 months won't be as limiting and stressful as the 12 we've just endured. I will be open again from 8th January 2021, regardless of any lockdowns, as Osteopaths are vital workers, and we can continue working due to strict PPE protocols. If you need to contact me in the meantime, please email me and pose any questions you may have.

Merry Christmas, too, and a very Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all soon. :)

Until then,

Much love to you and yours!
